For Dec. 2012, The SHARC Report Looks at PG&E’s New Smart Meters

electric-meter

This old-school electric meter relies on 19th century clockwork technology to meter electricity.  Not exactly “dumb” but by no means “hi-tech”

This is one of the new “smart meters” currently being installed by PG&E in Northern California.  These radio controlled devices provide no useful information to help customers make smart energy decisions, and they needlessly irradiate everything in their vicinity with microwave radiation.

This is an Italian “smart meter”  they do not irradiate anyone, and they have a great feature to help customers make smart energy decisions called “in home metering” with a device like this:

With in home real time energy monitoring, customers can see exactly how much energy they are using at any time, from the comfort of their indoor living space.  This feature is essential if “smart meters” are to help customers make smart energy choices.

Join me on Thursday Dec. 6 at 5pm on KMUD (www.kmud.org) for a discussion of this new application for radio technology.
